College Basketball Deserves our Respect

Unpredictability is characteristic in sports; it’s often what makes them exciting in the first place. We are drawn to the unexpected and moments that make us question, “Did that really happen?” College basketball breeds unpredictability. The sport’s unpredictability phenomenon is widely known come March, but its relevance all throughout the season is hardly acknowledged. College basketball is a fantastic example when it comes to the essence of sport itself. However, the problem is not enough people recognize it.  My strife is with the people who tend to disregard college basketball in favor of the NBA because college players are simply not as talented as NBA players. The NBA is a far cry from its peak in the early ’90s where […]

The College Football Playoff Needs to Change

Since the moment it was instituted, the NCAA’s College Football Playoff has been a success. Fans have rejoiced, teams have benefited, and advertisers have profited immensely. It has been a massive step-up from the Bowl Championship Series that only considered the top two teams in the country. That changed once the four-team bracket was finally put into place five years ago, creating an exciting alternative that would alter the college football landscape forever. In light of this success, questions have arisen on whether the Playoff can get any better. The College Football Playoff can be better. Let’s start with the biggest problem: parity. The Clemson Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide have dominated the tournament; in three of the past […]

Antonio Brown: A Modern Day Tragedy

Antonio Brown’s season is likely over, and he has only himself to blame. The All-Pro wide receiver’s demise has been stunningly quick, and yet, it surprised no one. Brown’s actions over the past six months have destroyed his reputation. Having been traded to the Raiders from the Steelers and finally getting released by the Patriots, Brown has exhausted all of his options. However, his path to unemployment involves more than football: it’s a saga of actions that were influenced by societal expectations. Brown’s career is an underdog story. Growing up in Northwest Miami, Brown faced many obstacles. His father, Eddie Brown, was an Arena Football League star; Brown didn’t see much of his father in the early stages of his […]

The United State’s Complicated, yet Promising Relationship with the World’s Game

For the first time since 1986, the United States failed to qualify for the most recent World Cup, yet the state of US soccer has never looked more promising. How is that possible? In 2018, the US Men’s National Team (national population of 327.2 million) suffered a devastating loss 2-1 at the hands of Trinidad and Tobago (national population of 1.369 million) in the final match of World Cup Qualifiers. The result was telling of a failing national team, and subsequently one that would miss out on the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The result was laughable, but more than anything else – concerning. Pundits and players alike were baffled by the result, and for a good reason. How does […]

Lebron James Jr isn’t a kid anymore; and it’s time for us to take notice

In classic AAU basketball Dad fashion, Lebron James jumped out of his seat with extreme excitement as he saw his oldest son, Lebron (Bronny) James Jr, dunk in his AAU tournament game this past weekend. Except, that wasn’t the only instance of LeBron James stealing the show away from his son, as he joined in with the pre-game warmups displaying his own array of dazzling dunks. But behind all of Lebron’s antic’s, his son showed why he’s finally the real deal. Bronny was destined for greatness at an early age; after all, he IS the son of one of the greatest basketball players of all time. However, that’s only half of the story. Bronny’s been playing on a national scale […]

Bill Laimbeer and his Unorthodox Relationship with “Sportsmanship”

In a moment of intense frustration, Celtics center Robert Parish swung his right forearm at the head of Pistons forward Bill Laimbeer after failing to grab a rebound. Parish had enough of Laimbeer’s physical play and finally reacted in a manner Laimbeer secretly hoped he would. The 1987 Eastern Conference finals, and the rest of the NBA, had been completely altered by the actions of one team–the Detriot Pistons. The Pistons-Celtics rivalry symbolized the atmosphere of the NBA in the 1980s. The league had some of the most talented basketball players of all time, but somewhere between all the gaudy talents, sportsmanship was lost. The “Bad Boy” Detroit Pistons epitomized the league’s problem with sportsmanship: renowned for their dirty play, […]

Tim Tebow’s “Promise” Speech and How it Epitomizes his Leadership Skills

Eight years ago, Tim Tebow was on top of the football world, carrying the Denver Broncos to the NFL playoffs. Currently, Tim Tebow is a professional baseball player for the New York Mets’ Triple-A affiliate — the Syracuse Mets. This massive transformation can perfectly summarize Tebow’s sporting career: a confusing mess. But, if there is one thing Tebow will be remembered for, it will be his incredible leadership at the University of Florida. As a freshman, Tebow inserted his name into Florida Gator lore. Tebow was Florida’s Swiss army knife. Despite losing the starting quarterback job, Tebow contributed to Florida’s 2007 BCS National Championship in various ways. He finished as Florida’s second-leading rusher and passed for five touchdowns, including one […]
